Dom's post abput editing the launch options worked for me:
-dxlevel 90 -sw -heapsize 1024000
these options got the game running where before it would simply freeze at the "Loading..." message.

Good luck, eh...

Hi all,

I've been tardy in getting in on the Episode One / Episode Two action, and was astonished to find the games unstable after all this time...

Despite everyone's helpful advice, I couldn't get past the first loading screen, with the game hanging on a black screen, with looping sound, after the valve video bit...

...until...

I bodged a simple solution together from a few other posts. I found that starting the game with the -sw command in launch options got the game loaded, albeit running in a window.

No one wants that, and it took my ruddy ages (and much messing around with the console etc) before I realised that you can then simply go into the options, video, and then swap to a full screen before starting / loading a game.

That, and a combination of the -setheap command, and forcing the game to run in direct x 9 has got me (touch wood) great performance on a modest PC setup.

If anyone wants to try it, my launch options thingy now reads:

-dxlevel 90 -sw -heapsize (half physical memory in KB - 256000 in my case)

Hope this helps someone anyways!

i can't start half life 2: episode 1. I have buyed the orange box and i don't have any problem with other games.
The game loads and i can see the image of the background of the main menu, the combine palace exploding, and suddently i recive this message:

HALF-LIFE2: hl2.exe - Errore di applicazione
L'istruzione "0x0f263e2c" ha fatto riferimento alla memoria "0x0d74a1a0". La memoria non poteva essere read. Fare clic su Ok per terminare l'applicazione.
(The instruction "0x0f263e2c" was made reference to memory "0x0d74a1a0". The memory couldn't be in read status).

I run windows xp with service pack 2, directx 9c, as far as i can tell everything is updated.
I mount a nvidia 8800 GTS 320 mb and i have updated the drivers after the error but with no results. 2Gb ram intel core 2 @ 2.40 Ghz.

Please help me
